American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
ASTM is one of the largest voluntary standards development systems in the world. It is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for producers, users, consumers and those having a general interest to meet on common ground and write standards for materials and products.

ASTM F1937-04 Body Protectors Used in Horse Sports and Horseback Riding
The ASTM standard is the most stringent in North America as far as impact performance and ergonomic coverage of the body. This level of protection is not mandatory in any discipline, but it is recommended by the United States Pony Club that all members wear an ASTM approved vest.

ASTM F1163-2004a Headgear Used in Horse Sports and Horseback Riding
“Consumer Note: The ASTM F1163 standard has been revised numerous times since its initial publication in 1988. Each revision reflects the technical committee's ongoing effort to improve the standard and provide consistency in testing. A helmet that has been SEI certified to the previous edition, ASTM F1163-01, remains certified even though SEI is now testing to the most recent edition.
Important Reminder: The user and/or owner of an equestrian helmet is responsible for reading and following manufacturer's instructions on the proper use, care and replacement recommendations of the helmet. A helmet can only protect those areas of the head that are covered by the helmet and cannot protect against all types of injuries. No equestrian helmet should be used again after an impact has occurred, even if damage is undetectable.”

BETA 2000 – Level 3

Developed by the British Equestrian Trade Association, this standard is applicable in the United Kingdom but not in North America. The Level 3 portion of the BETA standard is the same as the EN 13158 standard for Europe.

The BETA 2000 standard is divided into 3 performance levels:
Level 3 – Offers appropriate protection for general riding.
Level 2 – Offers a level of protection suitable for lower than normal risk situations.
Level 1 – Offers a level of protection appropriate for professional jockeys.

EN 13158
This standard is the same as the BETA 2000 Level 3 standard, but does not include Levels
2 or 1.

Satra Jockey Vest and Satra General Riding Vest Standard
Satra Technology Centre is a well-established testing laboratory in England. With their many years of experience, Satra has developed their own standards for equestrian vests. They are less stringent in terms of impact performance, but this allows for much more flexibility and less weight.
